第2回 国際高性能繊維およびポリマー会議の開催概況


国際高性能繊維およびポリマー会議会場
  東華大学主催※による第2回 国際高性能繊維およびポリマー会議(2005 International Conference on Advanced Fibers and Polymer Materials)が中華人民共和国・上海市にて、2005年10月19日から21日までの3日間開催された

※ 共和国科学技術部、上海市科学技術委員会、中国化学繊維工業協会などが後援 。
  本会議は2002年に開催された第1回会議に続くものであり、講演者、ポスタープレゼンテーションへの参加者、聴講者を合わせると17ヵ国から450名以上(主催者の発表)の参加があり盛況であった。なお、講演件数が105件、ポスタープレゼンテーションは242件あった。

主な講演の概要
1.高性能ポリマー・繊維の研究開発「汝いずこへ行く?」

(1)ポリマー科学の進歩
    ポリマー科学とその技術は材料科学における比較的新しい分野であり、20世紀始めにベルギー・ゲントでBaekelandによって最初の合成ポリマーが作られ、1920年代にStaudingerが鎖状高分子の概念を仮定してから80年しか経っていない。
  ポリマー製造産業が始まって以来、特にヨーロッパでは、民間と公的機関の強固な連携が常に続けられてきた。一番の例はイタリアでのMontecatiniとミラノのNatta c.s.によるイソタクチックポリプロピレンの開発であり、研究室での開発から5年で商業生産に移された(1957年)。現在では世界中で年間3千万トン以上が生産されている。
  1980年代を振り返ってみると、期待されていた合成ポリマーの開発が進み、おそらく最も成功した10年間と言えるだろう。メタロセンをベースとする新しい触媒方式によって重合過程がコントロールされ(ヨーロッパ:Kaminsky,Sinn Brintzinger、米国:Ewen)、s-PS(シンジオタクチックポリスチレン)やs-PP(シンジオタクチックポリプロピレン)などの新しいポリマーの生産を可能にし、ポリエチレンの密度をより低い範囲に拡張させ、エラストマーの性質を持たせた。また、スチールやガラス繊維の機械的性質を超えたポリマー(重量をベースにした比較)、スーパー繊維(アラミド、超高強力ポリエチレン)が開発された。そして、ポリヒドロキシアルカノエート(ICI/Zeneca)などの直線状ポリエステルを作り出すのにバクテリアが使用されたことで、合成ポリマーと天然ポリマーとの境界も無くなった。
  次期ポリマーには、新しい機能性として、真性導電率やpoly-LEDと呼ばれる発光ポリマーなどの特殊性質が予想されている。企業の研究開発プログラムが新分野開拓のために始まっており、例えば高性能複合材料(BASF)、新規エンジニアリングプラスチック(シェルのポリケトン)がある。元々、無機材料の代替として開発された合成ポリマーは、質が悪く安物のプラスチックのイメージであったが、1980年代に独自の性質を持った材料として円熟した。ドイツでは「代用」の意味を含む"Kunststoffe"から"polymere werkstoffe"に用語が変わった程である。

    21世紀に入り、長期間にわたる産学間の連携の悪さから、ポリマー製造産業において大きな変革が起こった。一般的には、企業において長期間の研究を経て新しい技術が開発されるか、または大学等との共同研究で3〜4年間のタイムスケールの間(博士号取得までの期間)に意見の違いが起こり開発を断念するかのどちらかである。企業側の最重要課題はコスト低減と生産規模の増加にあり、オレフィン系のプラントでは、能力が年間50万トンを超えているものもある。生産規模の拡大のために合併も進み、大きなものにはMontellとBasellの合併があるが、今や投資金融業者に売られてしまった。多くの企業が変動の激しい石油化学ビジネスから離れ、ライフサイエンスへ事業の中心を移している(Hoechst,DSM)。
  ポリエチレン、ポリプロピレン、ポリスチレン、ポリ塩化ビニルの4つの汎用プラスチック、更には高度な熱可塑性を持ったポリエステルやポリカーボネートが汎用ポリマーとなりつつある。一般に「汎用化」の傾向は利益率を低下させており、今後、上述の汎用プラスチック並みに使用される新規ポリマーがマーケットに提供される可能性は極めて少ない。事実、今日使用されているポリマーの大部分、例えばポリエチレン、ポリウレタン、ポリメタクリル酸メチルなどは1950年代および1960年代に開発されている。明らかに、プラスチックの分野は成熟し、少なくとも材料工学については、近い将来最適化が求められるだろう。
  また、最近10年間に開発されたプラスチックには、粒子から繊維状物質まで非常に多くの添加物が含まれることに留意しなければならない。このナノ時代においては、ナノクレイやカーボンナノチューブ(CNTs)などのナノサイズの添加物に関心が高まっており、これらの高機能添加物はさらに性能を向上させるだろう。そして、その「ナノ効果」が議論されるだろう。
  この傾向は、自動車産業、建築産業、包装産業などにおけるポリマー/プラスチックに集中している。しかしながら、学術的には産業界の現状の傾向にしばられるべきではない。最も重要なことは、大学での研究における高分子合成のコントロールに関する最近の研究開発が有益なものであり、小規模であっても新しい産業に結びつくものかということである。電子工学における機能性ポリマー、例えばスマートテキスタイルや医学技術での表示技術に関する期待が高まっている。

(3)新規ポリマーおよび高性能繊維の開発
    石油を原料とするプラスチックは今世紀中に資源を枯渇させるだろう。天然由来のバイオプラスチックや建築用エコブロックは興味深いトピックスであり、EUや政府のプログラムにおいても刺激を与えているが、主要な研究開発機関の努力にもかかわらず、これまでの結果は期待外れなものとなっている。PHB(ポリヒドロキシブチレート)やPLA(ポリ乳酸)などのポリマーは、法律によってこれら再生可能なプラスチックの使用を義務付けなければ、日本や中国などのアジア諸国に比べてヨーロッパや米国では将来性が無いと思われる。

  最近の10年間で、高性能繊維の1次元での性能が深く探索されたが、これからの10年間は、どのような繊維と複合材料が開発されるだろうか? 高性能繊維を製造については2つの重要な開発があり、1つはアラミド(PPTA:ポリパラフェニレンテレフタルアミド)やPBO(ポリパラフェニレンベンゾビスオキサザール)などの剛直高分子であり、もう一方は超高分子量ポリエチレン「ダイニーマ(DSM)」とその中国版コピー(Chineema!?)などの弾性ポリマー高分子である。これらの繊維軸に沿って整列した鎖状高分子は、固有の異方特性による、せん断強度と圧縮強度の不足により、複合材料においてガラス繊維や炭素繊維の代替には至らなかった。 元々、Akzo Nobel社で複合材料を強くする可能性のある繊維として開発された「M-5」と呼ばれる繊維は、現在Du Pont社とMagellan社により、せん断強度と圧縮強度をアラミドや高強力ポリエチレン、PBOと比較できるレベルに改良され開発が続けられている。「M-5」の化学構造は以下の通りであり、分子間は水素結合により結合している。 アラミドが強度3 GPa、弾性率100 GPa、圧縮強度0.5 GPaであるのに対し、「M-5」は強度5 GPa、弾性率300 GPa、圧縮強度1.5 GPaと良好な機械的性質を持つ。

(4)今後の開発動向
    航空工学などにおける高度複合材料での炭素繊維との競合などのスーパー繊維のための究極性能の追求を別にすれば、別の重要な問題としてガラス繊維などの汎用材料の処分を将来どうするかという問題がある。法律面では、例えばEUでは特に自動車部品についてリサイクルが義務付けられているが、ガラス繊維強化プラスチック複合材料(FRP)のリサイクルは難しく、焼却後の残留物が問題となっている。ガラス繊維をジュートや亜麻などの天然繊維に置き換える試みや、オールPP化などの強化プラスチックの新しい概念の導入などの、完全にリサイクル可能な複合材料の開発にこの問題を解決する可能性がある。
  また、天然の再生可能な繊維への関心が高まっており、リン酸(Bocell)などの汎用溶剤でセルロース(パルプ)を紡糸する技術が開発され、再生可能な植物資源を原料としたポリ乳酸繊維が市販されている。また、将来、天然の高性能繊維としてスパイダーシルクのような蛋白繊維の実用化が一部の科学者から報告されている。

 
2.接触角測定法およびX線光電子分光法によるPBOおよびSPBO繊維の表面特性係数の測定

(1)目的
    PBOおよびSPBO繊維は、乾式および湿式紡糸の技術を応用した液晶紡糸により製造する。SPBO繊維はPBO骨格にスルホン酸ナトリウムを導入し、共重合させたものである。実験室で製造した繊維は、平均繊維径が28μm、強度がPBO:4.3GPa、SPBO:2.1GPa、モジュラスがPBO:84GPa、SPBO:94GPaであった。
  PBOおよびSPBO繊維の表面特性を計測し、接着性の向上を確認する。

(4)結論
    繊維表面の接触角と自由エネルギーは接触角分析システムを使い、繊維表面の組成はX線光電子分光法により測定を行った結果、SPBO繊維はPBO繊維よりも水およびエチルアルコールへの湿潤性が高いことが示された。そして、SPBO繊維の表面自由エネルギーはPBO繊維より7.7%上昇し36.13MJ/uとなり、繊維表面の窒素/炭素比、酸素/炭素比も0.3070および0.0471へそれぞれ増加していることが確認された。

 
3.抗菌ポリマーおよびファイバー
  米国 カリフォルニア大学デービス校 テキスタイル服飾学科 Gang Sun教授

(1)序論
    抗菌ポリマー類は生物学的な保護材料として近年需要が増加しており、注目されている開発分野である。生物学的な安全性について、特に病院外での多薬剤への耐性細菌に関しては、ヘルスケア関連業者と病院の患者のいずれにとっても重要な関心事であり、また、テロリストによる潜在的な生物テロは社会に対する新しい挑戦になっている。新しい抗菌ポリマーの開発により、抗菌ファイバーの生産が可能となり、生物防護衣料や手術衣が作られるようになり、機能性ポリマーは、コーティングやプラスチックおよびフィルムを含む多くの製品において様々な機能性を付与している。理想的な抗菌ポリマーには、以下の特性があるべきである。@接触により病原菌の広域スペクトルをすばやく殺菌する。A製造と応用が経済的であること。B無毒であって環境に優しいこと。Cそして、抗菌機能の耐久性がある、または機能を回復させることができること。抗菌ポリマーおよびファイバーの開発において、近年多くの進歩が見られており、このプレゼンテーションではこれらのレビューを提供する。

(2)抗菌剤
    抗微生物機能は、微生物の完全な殺菌であり、抗菌性と呼ばれます(これは、生体の構造機能的な反応と全く異なります)。 生体の構造機能は、微生物類の成長を抑制するが、完全に細菌を殺すことできると言う訳では無いため、保護するためには抗菌性(微生物類の広域スペクトルの急速で効率的な不活性化)が必要となる。 抗菌薬剤をポリマーに組み入れることによって、ポリマー材料での抗菌性を達成することができる。表1に一般的な抗菌剤を示す。

  抗菌剤は、ホルムアルデヒドや重金属イオン(銀、銅)、長い炭素水素鎖がある四級アンモニウム塩類、フェノール類、または、オゾン、ヨウ素、過酸化水素、クロラミン、塩素のような酸化剤かもしれません(図1)。これら薬剤は異なった機構や制限により微生物を不活性化する。抗生物質は生殖の酵素類を抑制することで細菌を殺し、ポリマー材料での使用は確実に関心を引き起こすだろう。四級アンモニウム塩類やフェノール化合物は微生物の浸透しやすい特性により細胞を損傷する。そして、酸化剤のいくつかの機能的な化学的な反応により、微生物は急速に不活性化するが、これらの大部分には有毒性と皮膚刺激性がある(表1)。これらのうち細菌の酸化による不活性化が早く、選択せず、微生物に不変ではないものが理想的な抗菌ポリマーに必要な条件を満たす。

(3)抗菌性ポリマー
    多くの抗菌ポリマーは製造時に物理的または化学的に抗菌剤を組み込むことで作られている。耐久性のある機能を提供するためにファイバーまたはポリマーに十分な抗菌剤を加える方法によるべきです。たいていのポリマーは内部から表面にゆっくりと薬剤を放出することで細菌を不活性化する。しかしながら、殺菌剤が共有結合による結合でない方法で材料中に染み込ませてあれば細菌を完全に消滅させることができるだろう。ヘキサメチレンビグアニド塩酸塩や四級アンモニウム塩、銀イオンを組み込んだポリマーは、抗菌構造の組み込みにより開発された抗菌ポリマーの成功例と言える。重合体の四級アンモニウム(Poly Quats)は、文献検索によって見つけられる抗菌性構造の材料である。成功しているPoly Quats構造を図2に示す。表面をグラフト化したQuatsは、接触による殺菌において相当効果的である。たいていのQuatsは疎水性の長いアルキル鎖を含んでおり、直接細胞膜に影響を及ぼすことができる。正確な抗菌メカニズムはまだ不明確で不明瞭であるが、一般的には陽性の四級アンモニウム窒素が陰性に帯電した細胞表面と互いに影響しあうと考えられている。Quatsの疎水性で長いアルキル鎖は、細胞膜において細胞質の組織の分裂を引き起こし、細胞を死滅させる。Poly Quatsは、最短1〜3時間のグラム陽性およびグラム陰性の細菌との接触でsix logまでの削減をもたらすことができる。トリクロサンやフェノール化合物は、液体または固形石鹸、プラスチック製品、ファイバーに細菌抑制剤のような性能を適用させる。トリクロサンは最大の機能を示すためには約18時間の接触時間が必要と思われ、これにより医療用防護材料での適用の抑制にもなる。トリクロサンは微生物類に対する反応の遅さに加え、微生物類に耐薬品性を生じさせており、これはテキスタイル加工における抗菌剤の使用についての主要な関心事である。銀イオンやナノ微粒子は、近年抗菌ポリマーへの適用が進められており、銀や銅、水銀などのいくつかの重金属成分が抗菌剤として知られている。水銀は、人間にとって極めて有毒であり、そのため一度も使われたことはない。銅は抗菌ポリマーやテキスタイル加工において適用されている。しかしながら、銅イオン水溶液の毒性により、その適用はほとんど制限されている。すべての金属イオンまたはその成分は、ポリマーにおけるキレート性もしくは金属のナノ微粒子の使用のどちらかによってポリマーに組み込まれる。金属イオンは、細胞におけるあるアミノ酸の作用により放出され、微生物を終結させる原因となるだろう。抗菌性の反応は低く弱く、多くの接触時間を必要とする。別の再生可能な抗菌性構造は、酸性の条件のもとで有機カルボン酸と過酸化水素を反応させることで形成されるペルオキシカルボン酸である。

(4)抗菌ポリマー
    上記の抗菌ポリマーはかなりポピュラーであるが、重大な不都合があり、すなわち、急速な抗菌機能を微生物類の広範囲スペクトルに提供することができず、その結果、生物学的保護材料として要求されている性能を満たすことができない。近年、Halamineポリマー類(図3)は、細菌、菌類、酵母菌およびウイルスに対して強力な抗菌機能を示すことが明らかとなっている。Halamine化合物はプールで使われる遊離塩素と似ているが、より安全な抗菌剤である。なぜなら、それらは水中で発がん性物質(HCCl3)を作り出す原因とはなりにくいからである。Halamineは生物学的機能よりむしろ酸化メカニズムにより微生物を不活性化させ、より広い用途において環境問題を減らす結果となった。ポリマー鎖と薬剤間の共有結合は、微生物類の不活性化による影響を受けず、材料における抗菌のための強固な関係をもたらす。酸化還元抗菌機能は可逆的であり、その結果、材料表面を塩素漂白に晒すことで容易に再生することができる。Halamineの抗菌機能は、今のところ固形材料で最も強く、ポリマーの表面が安全に皮膚接触をしている間の2分の接触時間で100万の病原菌を不活性化することができる。Halamine化学的性質は、水中での消毒とヘルスケアおよび緊急作業員のための抗菌テキスタイル材料に適用することができる。セルロースとスチレンの改良、Halamine構造の活性化または再構築、そして微生物類の不活性化など全体のオペレーションを再生原理によって説明することができる。Halamine構造は現在、合成繊維の押出工程において組み込まれている。
